Gluten and Dairy Free Chocolate Whoopie Pies


Some facts about whoopie pies:

  • The whoopie pie is the official state treat of Maine
  • The world’s largest whoopie pie was created in South Portland Maine on March 26, 2011, weighing in at 1,062 pounds
  • The town of Dover Foxcroft, has hosted the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival since 2009, it has around 7,500 visitors per year

Gluten and Dairy Free Chocolate Whoopie Pies

Gluten and Dairy Free Chocolate Whoopie Pies

Serves 12


For the sponge:

  • 250g gluten free plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 125ml vegetable oil
  • 180ml dairy free milk

For the buttercream:

  • 250g icing sugar
  • 125g dairy free spread
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa powder


  1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC
  2. Whisk together the caster sugar, egg, vegetable oil and milk
  3. Stir in the flour, baking powder and cocoa
  4. Line a couple of baking sheets with parchment paper
  5. Drop 24 individual tablespoons onto the baking sheets
  6. Bake in the oven for 12 minutes
  7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely
  8. Make the buttercream by beating together the icing sugar, cocoa powder and dairy free spread
  9. Use the frosting to sandwich together the whoopie pies

Double Exciting News!

Hello Everyone

Book 2 Update and It’s All About Cake!

I’ve started work on my second e-book with the intention of having it ready for the end of the summer. I’ve made the choice to make it a book dedicated to all different types of gluten and dairy free cakes. The most exciting thing about the book is that it will all be brand new recipes that I haven’t posted on the site.
