Gluten and Dairy Free Chocolate Banana Cake

Two of my favourite cakes (and there are many) are banana bread and chocolate cake so I decided to have a go at combining them and this is the result! A moist chocolate cake with a hint of banana flavouring.


For the cake:

  • 225g gluten free self-raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon xanthan gum
  • 3 tablespoons gluten and dairy free cocoa powder
  • 115g light brown sugar
  • 30ml honey
  • 30ml golden syrup
  • 2 eggs
  • 60ml almond milk
  • 60ml olive oil
  • 2 large bananas, mashed

For the icing:

  • 225g icing sugar
  • 7 teaspoons gluten and dairy free cocoa
  • 3 tablespoons water


GF Banana Cake

  1. Preheat the oven to 160 oC and line a 1lb loaf tin
  2. Sift together the flour, xanthan gum and cocoa
  3. Mix in the sugar, honey, syrup, eggs, milk and oil
  4. Stir through the mashed banana
  5. Bake in the centre of the oven for 1 hour
  6. Allow the cake to cool completely
  7. Mix together the icing sugar, cocoa and water until it forms a thick paste
  8. Spread on top of the cake
