Gluten and Dairy Free Chinese Orange Chicken

Chinese food can sometimes be quite difficult to enjoy for coeliacs as it often contains soy sauce. I’m lucky that I have a Chinese restaurant near work that has a good choice of gluten free dishes. Dinner there on Friday night has inspired me to create some gluten and dairy free Chinese dishes you can make at home. Don’t be put of by the ingredient list for this dish it is actually pretty easy to put together.




For the orange sauce:

  • 175ml water
  • 35ml orange juice
  • 10ml lemon juice
  • 40ml rice wine vinegar
  • 20ml tamari, gluten free soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange zest
  • 50g brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 4 spring onions, sliced
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried chilli flakes
  • 1 tablespoon cornflour mixed with 2 tablespoons water

For the chicken:

  • 300g chicken, cut into cubes
  • 1 tablespoon gluten free flour
  • salt and pepper for seasoning

  1. In a medium sized saucepan place the water, orange juice, lemon juice, rice vinegar, soy sauce, orange zest, sugar, ginger, garlic, spring onion and chilli flakes
  2. Bring to the boil and simmer for a couple of minutes
  3. Set aside to cool
  4. Mix together half of the sauce and the chicken and place in the fridge to marinade for a couple of hours
  5. Remove the chicken from the fridge, drain away any excess marinade and toss the chicken with the flour
  6. Season with salt and pepper
  7. Add the chicken to a hot pan with a drizzle of olive oil and stir fry for 10 minutes
  8. Add in the cornflour mix and the remaining sauce
  9. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes
  10. Serve with rice
