A hot cross bun is a spiced fruit bun with a cross piped on the top. Traditionally the cross was made from shortcrust pastry but in recent years this has changed to the easier method of a flour and water paste.
The buns can be made with the original sultanas and citrus peel or a more modern variation of apple pieces or in New Zealand they often substitute the sultanas for chocolate chips (dairy free in our case!)
These buns taste as good as they smell,
